Mahalo for your interest in auditioning for the O'ahu Choral Society!
The O'ahu Choral Society is a volunteer, auditioned community chorus with a 25+ year history of choral singing at a professional level. OCS performs with the Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra, independently, and with other musical groups on the island. We are a diverse group with members coming from across the spectrum in age, occupation, cultural background, and location on island. 2023-2024 Season Recap We presented an eclectic season, filled with extraordinary music and a few arrangements that have never been heard before! In October, our Chamber Choir and the Choir of the Cathedral of St. Andrew partnered in performing "Music for a Secret Chapel" which highlighted the genius music of William Byrd in commemoration of the 400th Anniversary year of his death. The UH Chamber Choir joined our Symphonic Choir in November to produce a concert aptly titled, the "Great Romantics", paying homage to composers such as Boulanger, Fauré, and Brahms. In tune with the season of togetherness, we experienced a standing-room only audience for our traditional "Maluhia - A Time of Peace" holiday performance, and after the Winter break, we joined forces with the UH Choirs, adding the UH Band Ensembles and Hawai'i Pacific University Choir for a roaring Spring Band Concert in February, "Ka Leo O Ka Makani", that soared over the mauna of Waimano Ridge in Pearl City. This concert debuted an original arrangement of Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb by our guest conductor, Jeff Boeckman. Another first of its kind manifested itself in April when our Chamber Choir with the UH Choirs jazzed it up "Measure for Measure" by performing historical lyrics of William Shakespeare set to more contemporary tunes. For the finale of our season, we notably assembled our first ever inter-island tour collaborating with Kona Choral Society and members of the Kamuela Philharmonic. Performing both in Kona and O'ahu, our "Psalms in Paradise" concert featured Mozart's Solemn Vespers and the iconic Chichester Psalms by Bernstein. UPCOMING AUDITIONS for 2024-2025 Season Auditions for new members interested in joining us for the 2024-2025 season will be held on Saturday, August 17, 1pm - 5pm at UH Music Building, Rm. 36 and Saturday, August 31, 1pm - 5pm at Church of the Crossroads in the Sanctuary. Our season beings on Monday, September 4, 2024 with our last concert being on May 4, 2025. GENERAL INFORMATION OCS rehearsals generally take place on Monday evenings during the season (beginning of Sept through May), from 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm at the University of Hawaii - Manoa, Music Department Room 36 (2411 Dole Street). There will be additional dress rehearsals throughout the season during concert weeks. A full rehearsal schedule will be provided to all members before the start of each season. QUESTIONS?
