Renowned violinist Ignace Jang, who will be concertmaster for the Brahms performance, said, "Imagine the sights and sounds of a symphonic orchestra joined by hundreds of powerful voices on the Blaisdell stage - something that has become all too rare these days. On April 12, thanks to the OCS and Artistic Director Esther Yoo, stop imagining and open up your eyes, open up your ears. Audiences will live through a real time, real life musical experience. Savor the full palate of flavors performed by the musicians and singers."
"The Symphony Chorus was originally founded to sing choral masterworks with an orchestra," explains Dr. Yoo. "We have nearly 100 voices, all excellent singers, and most of them joined the Chorus because it offered the opportunity to sing with an orchestra." In past seasons the O'ahu Choral Society has presented concerts with smaller orchestral forces such as the two 9/11 memorial performances of Mozart's Requiem, Haydn's Nelson Mass as a Veteran's Day Memorial concert, and their recent “Christmas with Bach and Mendelssohn". However, the last major work performed with the full symphony orchestra and the Honolulu Symphony Chorus was the performance, in December 2010, of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
Hailed for her "diamantine high notes... and giddy delirious coloratura" (Boston Globe), Welsh-born soprano Rachel Schutz is increasingly in demand throughout the US, Europe and Asia. She has previously sung with the Symphony Chorus in Carmina Burana (2012), and Haydn’s Nelson Mass (2011).
Valerian Ruminski is a true basso cantante, whose bold and powerful vocal lyricism and remarkable coloratura have created great recognition for his exceptional talent. He has sung many roles with the Hawaii Opera Theatre, and joined with the Symphony Chorus for our performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in 2009.
The Brahms Requiem is the perfect vehicle for a return to singing a major work with orchestra. Written as a requiem and consolation for all humanity, the libretto was compiled from the Lutheran Bible by the composer himself, and marked a turning point in his musical career.
